Acai Berry Origins
The acai berry grows on palms within the Amazon basin, with the palms growing in profusion although their fruit has been largely ignored until now. Aside from the Amazon, the acai palm is a native plant growing freely in the whole of Central and South America although it does prefer tropical temperatures and swampy ground: put these together and you have an ideal location for the acai palm to grow – and it does, prolifically! The pure acai berry has been a major food source for the indigenous people for many generations as their main diet consists of natural fruits that are grown locally is some profusion.

Harvesting this Valuable Cash Crop
Once discovered, research revealed its pharmacological value and further studies revealed a number of different pure acai berry species, all providing similar fruits but some having more of one benefit and less of another. Apart from the berries which are now a valuable export, some varieties of acai are harvested for their wood and other plant fibres. When the acai berries are ripe they are harvested in large bunches consisting of around 600 berries. Each berry is no bigger than an average-sized grape, the color of dark purple, with a single seed in the centre of each berry. Once harvested much of the crop is transported to processing mills where it is dried and pounded into a powder that is then packaged to be used as a supplement in drinks and health foods.

Reasons Why It is Being Harvested
Conservationists welcome the harvesting of acai berries with a degree of restraint. This is partly due to concern for the eco-system that is delicately balanced within the Amazon forests. However, on the other hand, due to the massive market for the acai berries deforestation of the Amazon rainforests has been disrupted to a certain extent. Nevertheless, the socio-economic balance in the Amazon basin is profoundly fragile although, thanks to the humble acai berry the Amazon rainforest has now been certified as falling within Forest Stewardship Council guidelines. Harvesting the acai berries have prevented the slash-and-burn policy along the river banks of the Amazon and tributaries but the harvest needs to be protected into subsequent generations: harvesting this valuable cash crop involves very intensive farming, with difficult harvesting conditions made worse by infections spread by insects that are particularly difficult to treat.
